The CFA (Cat Fancier’s Association) reports that only a small number of cats are actually labeled as “pedigree”. This number is between 3-5% of the entire cat population. What does pedigreed mean? The term pedigreed describes a cat that is bred from a particular parentage and conforms to the specific standard of what the breed should look like. Pedigree breeds are registered with the CFA or another similar type organization called the International Cat Association (ICA).
You could compare these organizations similar to the AKC that pertains to dogs. However, unlike dog breeds, there are only approximately 50 cat breeds that are recognized by these groups, and these breeds are very rare.
Cats always run the risk of getting injured and this is especially true if your cat is allowed to roam outside without boundaries. The greatest amount of danger to outside cats is the traffic coming from vehicles. The injuries that are caused by oncoming cars are typically so grave that cats die on the spot. However, sometimes a severely wounded cat will be able to drag himself to its home before dying. And even if there are still signs of life, most often then not the cat’s injuries will be too severe to save him.
When your cat starts to reach those golden years his senses will slowly start to decline. His vision will deteriorate, as well as his hearing and sense of smell. Not all cats age the same, but there are some common changes that you can look out for so you can be sure to take extra care when he starts to hit old age.
There’ll be some changes that you may hardly notice as the years go on because your cat adopts to them but if you pay attention and have regular veterinarian checkups, then any diseases or other negative affects of aging can be prevented as best possible. On the other hand, some changes will be very obvious to you, such as bad breath which is the result of dental disease.
